Ice Maker Not Working? These Are the Most Common Causes

The ice maker is the most-failure-prone single component on a modern refrigerator. Bay Area homes especially — the hard water in our area accelerates calcium buildup that kills ice makers years before the rest of the fridge has any issue. Here are the common causes, ordered by how often I see them on actual service calls.
1. Frozen water inlet line (most common)
The little plastic line that brings water from the household plumbing to the ice maker freezes shut. Ice can't form because no water arrives. Cause: freezer set too cold, a kink in the line, or low household water pressure. Thaw the line gently with warm water; raise the freezer setting to 0°F if you've been running it colder.
2. Clogged water filter
Refrigerator water filters are rated for six months. Most people run them for two years. By that point, water flow drops to a trickle and the ice maker can't fill the mold. Replacement is $40–$60 and takes 60 seconds.
3. Failed water inlet valve
The solenoid valve that opens to let water into the ice maker wears out — typically around year 5–7 in Bay Area homes. Symptom: the ice maker cycles but no water arrives. Test by checking whether the dispenser still gives water on the door — if not, the valve is the suspect.
4. Bad ice maker module
On most fridges (Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire), the ice maker is one assembly that bolts to the top of the freezer. When the harvest motor fails or the thermostat dies, the whole module gets replaced. Plug-and-play swap, $200–$350 with parts and labor.
5. Cloudy or off-tasting cubes
Different problem. Cloudy ice means high mineral content (very common with Bay Area tap water). Off-tasting ice almost always means the filter is past due, the lines have biofilm, or the freezer is absorbing odors from open food containers. Replace the filter, dump the first three batches of ice after any service, and store ice in a sealed container.
What to check before calling
- Is the ice maker switch ON?
- Is the bail wire (the metal arm) in the down position?
- When did you last replace the filter?
- Is the freezer reading 0–5°F?
- Is there water at the dispenser, or also no water there?
